Best Case Going, IMHO! Aug 23, 2010
By M. Lundeen
"WPCO"
I had the Otterbox Defender for my iPhone 3Gs and anxiously awaited the release of this case for my new iPhone 4. It arrived today and I am more than pleased with it already. There are a couple notable improvements over the previous model. First of all it doesn't seem to add as much bulk, it does obviously add bulk but it doesn't seem that much. The holster is a huge improvement. I would frequently knock the 3Gs out of the holster with a mere bump on the phone, the 4 LOCKS the phone in and you have to apply pressure to release it. Very secure. It also locks on to your belt securely. The silicone outer skin has a nice texture to it rather than being smooth like the previous model, easier to grip. Otterbox eliminated the plastic covers over the camera lens and that includes the flash which is another improvement over the 3Gs. The one place that I will need to watch is where the silicone secures around the screen, it seems it might com loose there. The flaps over the silence switch, docking port and ear plug are easy to open and close and seem secure. Otterbox has again created a bomb proof case, well worth the wait and extra money.
UPDATE: After a couple weeks of use I find the silicone case closure for the docking port to be a bit of a hassle to close easily. It's a two handed operation and can be frustrating. I find it easiest to close by pushing in the free end first and then push back towards the hinge. I commented on this to Otterbox and they immediately sent me a replacement silicone cover. Nice, but it doesn't solve the problem. I'm still very happy with the case and sticking with it. The only change I may make is to cut out the plastic screen cover and replace with the Power Support HD Anti-glare Film. I may also end up cutting the flap for the docking port off and eliminate the grief. I'm not as concerned about using the phone in the elements as I want to protect it from everyday abuse.

One of the best, but not perfect. Sep 22, 2010
By Johnny L. Lewis I purchased this newest version Otterbox for the iphone4 , and to the plus side found the screen protector is made from a different material than the model of just a few months ago. No longer do you get the screen and protector sticking together(the "oilslick" on the screen look). The holster is greatly improved and is not likely to release the phone by accident.
Now for the things that are'nt quite perfect. The opening for the ear speaker allows dust/particles to enter the case and get under the screen protector. The silcone flap for the recharger plug lifts a good portion of the bottom of the silicone slip cover when you open it up...the silicone case should fit tighter. And takes some attention/ both hands to reclose the charger flap. I will continue to use this case, and it does protect my phone on the job site, but I do have to take the case off every few days to clean the interior of the screen area due to that speaker opening.

Perfectly adequate Sep 30, 2010
By Christopher A. Locke Item arrived in about 3 days, even though the shipping estimate was more like 12.
Packaging was easy to open. Installation was easy and intuitive. I didn't read the directions, and didn't really think I needed to. It took about 2 minutes to install.
There's a hard plastic shell that locks together around the phone, and has a built-in clear screen protector. This on its own would probably provide a lot of protection. Over that, you get a rubberized skin that is separate, and has a couple of places where the rubber part locks into the plastic part, so the two parts basically become one, and there is no slipping around or shifting.
Everything seems to be well-made and well-thought-out with the volume buttons covered, and a flap over the headphone jack, the ringer on/off switch, and the sync port on the bottom.
Left uncovered, there's a tiny hole next to the headphone jack, the phone speaker on the front, and the two holes at the bottom on either side of the sync port. Of course, you also have the camera lenses and vanity hole on the back.
The belt holster seems to clip in securely. I will not be worried to wear it on my hip. It's easy to clip in, but a little less than elegant to get the phone out of the holster with one hand. It might take me a few days to get used to the clip/tilt/grab/lift. Also, the clip on the back of the holster swivels to change the angle the holster will hang at. But it doesn't just swivel indiscriminately. It has a series of positive locks that will hold it at whatever angle you choose, so you aren't limited to horizontal phone on a horizontal belt. You could clip your phone at 45 degrees to the strap on your backpack, if that's what you're into.
All in all, I'm very happy with the fit, the quality, the construction, etc. and I have no doubt this will be the first, last, and only case I will buy for my iPhone.
(By contrast, I was shopping at the local retail store recently. [You know, the one whose logo is the red bulls eye] and they only had one case that fit the iPhone4. It didn't have a built-in screen protector. It didn't have flaps over the exposed ports and switches. The cover didn't fit well, and the button on the top of the cover didn't work right. It was 1/5 the protection this case is, and didn't have the belt clip, and cost almost as much as this one. I would not hesitate to recommend this case to anyone I know.

Otter Box Defender for iPhone4 Oct 15, 2010
By Tilman Excellent product and easy to use. Great grip and excellent defense for the drops. Like most iPhone cases, it will not charge standing up on a mount, but that's the reality of triple wrapping your phone. Love it!! It was recommended to me unsolicited by a stranger at the ATT store (wasn't available there yet), and I am passing along the recommendation.

Good protection but... Sep 28, 2010
By m_d_mack The clip that holds the phone in place in belt clip broke after only 2 weeks of moderate use. The clip has to be bent slightly to release phone and it doesn't take long to weaken the clip. It broke as I was putting the phone back in the belt clip. This is a design flaw in my opinion.
