I wanted USB speakers to avoid the vampire power when not in use. I originally bought HP 2.0 compact speakers which were terrible. No power or volume buttons. So you can only adjust volume using the mouse and the speakers were always on, terrible sound quality, and constant hissing sound.
I bought these instead and the quality is great, good enough for me at least. Dedicated power button and volume button. So you can turn it off when not in use and not draw any power.
PROS
- Great sound and relatively small size
- USB doesn't draw vampire power
- USB powered doesn't occupy an outlet
- Power button to turn off when not in use
- Volume button
CONS
- No port for headphones
- Separate power and volume buttons. So if you leave the volume on high and turn it off, you may get blasted with sound when you turn the power back on. So turn the volume down before turning off.

Good value speakers, but a clarification... Apr 10, 2012

The USB is only used to power the speakers, it uses a standard stereo plug for the actual audio. This isn't necessarily bad, just that I originally thought it would use the USB plug for both power and the audio signal. I have other headphones which can use either USB or a stereo plug to get the audio signal. These speakers use both the USB for power and the standard stereo plug for the audio.
In other respects these speakers have performed well in the day since I received them.

Great little speakers! Jan 26, 2012

These speakers sound great and are well worth the inexpensive price. I previously had another well-known brand of laptop speakers that cost a lot more, did not perform nearly as well, required electrical outlet plug in and quickly died (just as other reviewers had warned they would!). I have been very pleasantly surprised by these speakers and with this brand in general. These little laptop speakers provide a much fuller, richer sound than most laptop speakers, are easy to use and very portable. Just plug into a USB port and the computer audio jack. The cords on the speakers are also long enough to place the speakers on the edge of a large desk to direct sound placement as you'd like. I have now purchased several Altec Lansing speaker systems (for iPod, iTouch, etc.) and they all sound amazing for the small size and reasonable prices. Highly recommend this brand.

Followed the reviews on Amazon of the various speakers, these seem to have the most positive. Consumers were right, they are fantastic speakers at a great price. The reviews are one of many reasons I shop constantly at Amazon....

Here's the problem: the sound quality seems to be OK, more than adequate for my purposes and use with my laptop. Unfortunately, only one speaker works, and the set has to be returned. So, while sound quality is OK based on listening to one speaker, I cannot comment on how the set will sound with both speakers working. I am disappointed the the set doesn't work properly,and really miffed that I have to go through the hassle of returning the speakers.
